Looking for a solid half-day on the water? Captain AJ Diebel's got you covered with his private inshore fishing charters around Corpus Christi and Port Aransas. This isn't some rushed tourist trap – it's a proper 4-hour fishing adventure where you'll actually have time to work the flats and back bays for some of Texas's most sought-after inshore species. With room for up to 3 anglers, you get the personal attention that makes all the difference between going home empty-handed or with a cooler full of fresh fillets.
Captain AJ runs his charters out of two prime locations – Driftwood Place and Cove Park – depending on conditions and where the fish are biting. You'll be fishing the productive shallow waters and grass flats that make this stretch of the Texas coast famous among inshore anglers. The beauty of a 4-hour trip is you're not rushed, but you're also not committed to a full day if conditions turn south. AJ provides everything you need: rods, reels, tackle, live bait, and even cleans and bags your catch at the end. All you need to bring is yourself, some snacks, drinks, and sun protection. This setup works great for families with kids, first-timers who want to test the waters, or experienced anglers looking to dial in on specific species without the full-day commitment.
You'll be fishing with spinning gear and light tackle – the perfect setup for the inshore game down here. Captain AJ knows that live bait consistently outproduces artificials when you want to put fish in the boat, so expect to work with live shrimp, croakers, and whatever's running fresh that day. The light tackle approach means you'll feel every bump, every run, and every head shake these inshore species throw at you. You'll be casting into skinny water, working grass beds, and maybe even sight-fishing if conditions are right. The spinning reels are forgiving for beginners but still give experienced anglers the control they want when working structure or drop-offs. Don't worry if you've never used live bait before – AJ will show you how to hook it properly and work it naturally to trigger strikes.
Redfish are the crown jewel of Texas inshore fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers average 20-28 inches in our waters and fight like they're twice that size. Fall and winter are prime time for slot reds, when they school up in the back bays and along grass lines. What makes them special is their aggressive nature – they'll crush live bait and put up a bulldogging fight that'll test your drag system. Plus, they're excellent eating when prepared right. Summer Flounder, or "doormat" flounder as we call the big ones, are ambush predators that lie buried in sand waiting for an easy meal. They're most active during spring and fall transitions, typically ranging 14-20 inches with the occasional keeper pushing 3-4 pounds. Landing a nice flounder is satisfying because they're tricky to hook – they'll mouth bait forever before committing. Black Drum are the heavyweight champions of the inshore scene, with fish ranging from 2-15 pounds being common in our area. Spring through fall offers the best action, especially around structure and oyster reefs. They're notorious bait stealers until you figure out their feeding pattern, then it's game on. Sea Trout round out the slam and are probably the most cooperative species you'll encounter. These silver beauties average 12-18 inches and are active year-round in our mild Texas climate. They school up over grass beds and soft bottoms, making them perfect for beginners to cut their teeth on while experienced anglers can target the bigger "gator" trout that lurk in deeper water.
A half-day trip with Captain AJ gives you everything you need for a memorable day on the water without breaking the bank or burning a whole vacation day. The fact that he handles all the gear, bait, and fish cleaning means you can focus on what matters – having fun and catching fish. Whether you're a local looking to get on the water more often or visiting Corpus Christi and want to experience our world-class inshore fishing, this trip delivers real value. The 3-person limit keeps things intimate and ensures everyone gets plenty of shots at fish. Book early, especially during peak season, because top-rated guides like AJ stay busy for a reason.
Black drum are the heavyweights of our inshore waters, typically running 5-30 pounds but capable of hitting 90+ pounds. These powerful fish love hanging around oyster beds and shallow muddy flats where they crush crabs and shellfish with their strong jaws. Spring is prime time when they school up for spawning - that's when you'll hear their distinctive drumming sounds underwater. They're excellent fighters that'll test your drag, but stick to the smaller ones under 15 pounds for the dinner table since the big bulls get tough and stringy. Pro tip: use fresh blue crab for bait and fish it right on the bottom - they won't come up for it, so bring your offering down to them.

Redfish are the kings of our shallow water flats, easily spotted by their bronze backs and distinctive black spots near the tail. Most run 20-30 inches, but we see plenty of "bull" reds over 40 inches that'll really test your gear. They love super shallow water - sometimes so shallow their backs stick out - around oyster reefs, grass flats, and muddy shorelines. Year-round fishing is solid here, but spring and fall offer the most consistent action when they're feeding heavily. What makes them special is their power and endurance - they'll make long, sustained runs that get your heart pumping. My secret weapon is a gold spoon worked slowly over shallow grass - the flash drives them crazy.

Spotted sea trout, or "specks" as we call them locally, run 14-24 inches and are absolutely beautiful fish with their silver sides and black spots. They love our grass flats and shallow bays, especially around dawn and dusk when they're most active. Winter brings some of the best action when they school up in deeper channels. What guests love about specks is their aggressive strikes and acrobatic jumps - they're scrappy fighters for their size. Plus, they're fantastic table fare with delicate, flaky white meat. The key to consistent success is working topwater plugs over grass beds early morning or switching to soft plastics when they go deeper. Keep your retrieve slow and steady - they like to follow before they commit.

Summer flounder are the masters of camouflage on our sandy bottoms, typically running 15-20 inches and weighing 1-5 pounds. These flatfish are ambush predators that bury themselves in sand and mud, waiting for baitfish to swim overhead. Fall months from September through November are your best bet when they're most active and feeding heavily. What makes them special is watching that sideways bite - both eyes are on one side, so they attack from left to right. They're also some of the best eating fish you'll catch, with sweet, flaky white meat. My go-to trick is hooking live minnows through the eyes and letting them work just off the bottom - flounder can't resist that natural presentation.
